a Siesta in Seattle?

The Siesta is a wonderful thing. A tradition in Spain and other cultures with hot climates, it's a way to avoid work during the hottest part of the day and give people (and businesses) a much-needed rest. Good sleep is associated with positive health impacts such as improved mood, cognition, and performance. Especially with the rise of remote work, an American Siesta is more realistic with access to a bed at home during the work day.

While Seattle isn't exactly a Mediterranean climate, we do have extremely long summer days; it would make sense to take a mid-day break and extend the evening. It only works when everyone does it, so let’s start a grassroots movement and give the Seattle Siesta a try. We can roll it out slowly, perhaps first just a couple days a year (on the solstices of course), then monthly, weekly... who knows?
